Johannesburg has more Islamic banking counters than any other South African city, but they are not where the search results suggest. Al Baraka Bank, the only full Islamic bank, runs a branch with ATM in Lenasia, a cashless service centre in Laudium and a regional office with service centre in Rosebank, and has no Fordsburg branch on its locator. HBZ Bank's Sirat window has five Gauteng branches: Fordsburg, Lenasia, Rosebank, Boksburg and Centurion. Absa Islamic, FNB Islamic and Standard Bank Shari'ah have no dedicated Islamic branches; their Islamic accounts open through any branch, the app or a relationship manager. This page lists every location, what opens digitally, and what a Gauteng buyer can get for a home or car, starting from our bank accounts hub.

Which banks have Islamic branches or desks in Gauteng

Four of the five Islamic banking providers on this edition are headquartered in Gauteng, yet only two have Islamic-specific physical sites in the province. Al Baraka's head office is in Durban, but its Gauteng regional and corporate office sits at 22 Cradock Avenue, Cradock Square, Office 01006, First Floor, Regent Place, Rosebank, which also operates as a service centre. Its Lenasia branch and ATM is at Shop 20, Signet Terrace Shopping Centre, 82 Gemsbok Street, Lenasia Extension 1, and its Laudium service centre and ATM at Laudium Plaza, corner of 6th Avenue and Tangerine Street, Pretoria, which the locator says became a cashless service centre operating from Shop 13 from 1 April 2025. All three use the national customer services line, 0860 225 786. Because every Al Baraka account is Islamic, any of these sites handles any product.

HBZ Bank, head office in Umhlanga, Durban, delivers Sirat through what its site calls window operations, Islamic branches and one dedicated Islamic Banking Branch, which is in Overport, Durban, not Johannesburg. In Gauteng the branch locator lists Fordsburg at 25 Dolly Rathebe Road, Johannesburg 2092 (011 630 4600), Lenasia at Shop 20 Signet Terrace, 82 Gemsbok Street (011 213 6540), Rosebank at First Floor, Oxford Corner, 32A Jellicoe Avenue (011 380 8786), Boksburg at Shop 34, Westwood Village, corner of Atlas and Phillips Street (011 841 0300), and Centurion at Lifestyle at 55, corner R55 and Lochner Road, Raslouw (012 374 9500). HBZ's Sirat team has a nationwide mandate, so any of these branches can open a Sirat account, and the published Sirat contact is sazone@hbzbank.co.za or the head office on 031 270 2600.

The three large banks run windows, not branches. Absa's head office is Absa Towers West, 15 Troye Street, Johannesburg, and its Islamic accounts are sold in every Absa branch, on the Absa Banking App and Absa Online, with an Islamic banking line on 0860 000 786 and islamicbanking@absa.co.za. Standard Bank, headquartered at 5 Simmonds Street, publishes its Shari'ah business products with a relationship manager or nearest branch as the route in, and the personal Shari'ah page returned a page-not-found error when we fetched it on 14 September 2026, so personal product terms should be confirmed at a branch. FNB Islamic Banking, from BankCity, is available through FNB branches and digital channels nationwide; FNB's website blocked our automated fetch, so this page does not quote FNB product details beyond what FNB states about its channels.

Absa, FNB and Standard Bank are deliberately left off the table because every one of their branches is, in principle, an Islamic banking site. In practice the quality of advice varies by branch, and a customer in Mayfair, Roshnee or Azaadville will often do better opening an Absa or FNB Islamic account on the app and phoning the Islamic banking line than walking into a branch where nobody has sold the product that month.

What opens digitally and what still needs a branch

Absa is the most digital of the group for savings. Islamic Depositor Plus opens on the Absa Banking App or Absa Online with an opening deposit of R100, and Absa pays an extra 0.25% Digital Bonus Rate on accounts opened and maintained digitally; Islamic TargetSave and Islamic Dynamic Deposit open on Absa Online or by phone. The entry-level Islamic Savings Account, with a R7.50 monthly fee and R50 opening deposit, is marked open at a branch, while the Ultimate Islamic Banking, Ultimate Islamic Plus, Islamic Gold Value Bundle, Islamic Premium Banking and Islamic Private Banking packages show online application buttons. Al Baraka takes residential and vehicle finance applications online with an application tracker, while its transactional and investment accounts direct you to contact a branch or request a call from a sales consultant. HBZ's Sirat pages route everything through an enquiry form or the branch. Standard Bank's Shari'ah business accounts and facilities go through a relationship manager or branch.

FICA documents are the same everywhere, with small differences in wording. Al Baraka asks for a green bar-coded ID or Smart ID and proof of address not older than three months for any account, and for finance adds proof of income (three months' salary confirmation, or the latest annual financial statements or tax return for the self-employed), three months' bank statements, a signed statement of income and expenditure and a signed statement of assets and liabilities, in joint names if married in community of property. Absa asks South African citizens for an ID and proof of residence not older than three months, and non-citizens for a passport, proof of residence and a work or resident permit. Business accounts at Al Baraka need the entity's founding document, proof of the trading address and ID plus proof of residence for every authorised signatory, and a R500 minimum balance against a R50 monthly admin fee.

  • Smart ID or green bar-coded ID for every applicant and signatory; non-citizens bring a passport and a work or resident permit.
  • Proof of residential address not older than three months, in a form on the bank's accepted list.
  • For finance: three months' bank statements, proof of income, and signed statements of income and expenditure and of assets and liabilities.
  • For business accounts: the entity's founding document and proof of the trading address, plus FICA for each signatory.
  • For employer-group or trust accounts: the founding document and a resolution naming the signatories, which Al Baraka lists by entity type.

Home finance for Gauteng buyers at each bank

Al Baraka's Residential Finance is a Musharaka with a term up to 30 years, a low deposit requirement, no monthly admin fees, fixed instalments reviewed annually with an option to pay a lump sum at the review, no early-settlement penalty, discounted attorneys' bond registration fees, and an initial once-off administration fee. Home refinance and bond switching from a conventional bank go up to 90% of the property value over a maximum of 20 years, which is the route a Lenasia or Laudium family with an existing bond uses. Applications can be submitted online and tracked, and the Lenasia branch or Rosebank service centre handles the paperwork. HBZ Sirat offers Commercial Property Finance and Income Generating Properties finance on Diminishing Musharakah, but its published Sirat residential offering is aimed at property for business and investment rather than a family home, so ask the Sirat team before assuming a home product exists.

Among the windows, FNB is the one that finances homes under an Islamic contract, and that is the main reason Johannesburg buyers search for FNB Islamic banking specifically; the terms are in our FNB Islamic property finance review. Absa and Standard Bank do not publish an Islamic home loan for individuals. The practical choice for a Gauteng buyer is therefore Al Baraka or FNB, and both can be compared on the home financing hub.

Vehicle finance for Gauteng buyers at each bank

Al Baraka publishes the most detailed vehicle terms. Fixed Instalment Motor Vehicle Finance (Murabaha) needs a 10% deposit, fixes the rate for a term up to 72 months, finances new or used vehicles from a recognised dealer up to six years old and 120,000 km, and allows a residual of up to 30% on new or demo vehicles. Variable Instalment Motor Vehicle Lease (Ijarah) runs up to 84 months on new or demo passenger and light commercial vehicles, or 72 months with a 30% residual, and up to 60 months on used vehicles not older than four years with under 80,000 km. Fixed Instalment Lease (Ijarah) covers brand-new or demo vehicles up to 60 months with a 10% deposit, no monthly admin fees and no early-settlement penalty. Private sales are not financed on any of the three. Absa Islamic Vehicle Finance uses Ijaarah with variable or fixed rental, 100% financing available, a negotiable inflated final payment, and the last payment treated as the purchase that transfers ownership; it is available for personal or business use through any branch.

HBZ's Sirat Vehicle Finance is a Diminishing Musharakah pitched at commercial vehicles and transport equipment for businesses. Standard Bank's Shari'ah Commercial Asset Finance covers passenger and commercial vehicles for juristic entities outside the National Credit Act only, so a salaried buyer in Sandton cannot use it. For a buyer who cannot get bank approval at all, No Bank Vehicles in Boksburg offers a rent-to-buy with no bank involved, which our car financing hub compares against the bank products.

Business banking contacts for Johannesburg SMEs

Al Baraka's business finance applications (trade, asset, fleet, commercial property, development property and commercial solar) are handled by its sales consultants via the website contact form with a Gauteng province selector, or at the Lenasia branch and Rosebank service centre, and the published route is to prepare the annual financial statements, three months' bank statements and FICA pack and then contact the nearest site. HBZ's Sirat business products, Sirat Murabaha and Sirat Al Bai trade finance and Diminishing Musharakah asset and property finance, are enquired through sazone@hbzbank.co.za or 031 270 2600, with the Fordsburg and Rosebank branches as the local faces. Standard Bank publishes its business banking line, 0860 109 075, and routes Shari'ah Business Current Account, Overdraft, Commercial Asset Finance and Commercial Property Finance through a relationship manager. GoTyme Bank, based in Rosebank, and Merchant Capital in Sandton serve SMEs digitally without a branch.

The verdict by area: south, inner city, north

South (Lenasia, Laudium, Roshnee, Azaadville): Lenasia is the best-served Islamic banking suburb in the country, with Al Baraka's branch and ATM and HBZ's branch at the same Signet Terrace centre on Gemsbok Street, so a family here can hold a full Islamic bank account, a Participation Account and home or vehicle finance without leaving the suburb. Laudium residents have Al Baraka's cashless service centre for applications but go to Lenasia or an ATM for cash. Roshnee and Azaadville have no Islamic site and are best served by Al Baraka Lenasia for finance and by an Absa or FNB app account for daily banking.

Inner city (Fordsburg, Mayfair): the only Islamic counter is HBZ's Fordsburg branch on Dolly Rathebe Road, which suits the trading families the Sirat window was built for, with murabaha and al bai trade finance up to 120 days. Al Baraka has no Fordsburg branch despite its Gauteng postal address being in the suburb, so a Fordsburg or Mayfair household wanting Al Baraka goes to Lenasia or Rosebank, or applies online for finance. North (Sandton, Randburg, Rosebank, Fourways): Rosebank is the hub, with Al Baraka's regional office and service centre and HBZ's Oxford Corner branch a few streets apart. Salaried professionals in the north usually end up with an Absa Islamic package or FNB Islamic cheque account opened on the app, Al Baraka or FNB for the home, and Al Baraka or Absa for the car. Facts checked against albaraka.co.za, hbzbank.co.za, absa.co.za, standardbank.co.za on 14 September 2026.
