Al Baraka Bank Al Baraka Monthly Investment Plan
Islamic Bank Accounts in Western Cape
A goal-based recurring savings plan: open with R100, then contribute a minimum of R100 per month, by debit order if you wish, over a fixed 12-month cycle. Contributions can be increased or decreased as circumstances change, and at maturity profits can be paid out or reinvested. Returns follow the bank's monthly-published Mudaraba profit distribution (4.873% per annum for June 2026). Personal and business variants are offered, and minors can save through a parent or guardian, making it a common choice for education and family goals.
This is the workhorse family savings product: R100 a month, a debit order, and a published Mudaraba return of 4.873% annualised as of mid-2026. It will not maximise yield, sitting below the Participation Account's longer tenors, but its job is habit formation and goal saving, and the flexibility to dial contributions up or down without penalty is worth more than a few basis points to most households. The structure is authentically Islamic with the same monthly rate transparency as the rest of the shelf. A sound default for education savings, especially opened for a minor alongside an iStart account.
Pros
- Lowest barrier to entry on the Al Baraka shelf
- Flexible contribution amounts fit variable incomes
- Published realised returns build trust
- Good companion to the iStart youth account for children's savings
Cons
- Lowest profit rate among the bank's Mudaraba products
- Not CODI-insured
- 12-month cycle limits liquidity
- No published tiering to reward larger balances

Why It's Halal
The Monthly Investment Plan brings ordinary monthly savers into the same Mudaraba pool that funds Al Baraka's asset-backed financing: each contribution participates in Murabaha, Musharaka and Ijarah profits, distributed at the published monthly rate rather than a promised interest rate. The flexibility to raise or lower contributions keeps the plan accessible without compromising the contract. It is overseen by the named four-scholar SSB under AAOIFI standards. Being a Mudaraba investment, capital is not guaranteed at par and is not CODI-insured, which is the disclosed cost of earning a genuinely halal return; savers wanting guaranteed capital would hold a transactional account instead and forgo profit.
